The streets of Asheville are usually dotted with activists on any given day.  On May 7th, 2016 downtown Asheville will be teeming with activists banding together in a "People's March to End Sexual Assault and Gender Violence." Participants will walk a mile, in the shoes of another, in a symbolic gesture of solidarity and community responsibility surrounding the issue of sexual violence.  


Walk a Mile, a fun and family-friendly event organized by the nonprofit Our Voice, helps to raise awareness about this issue which continues to plague communities everywhere.  The spirit of this event has helped Walk a Mile Asheville to garner an award for "top three fundraising events" by "Best of WNC" for three years in a row.  Men, women, and children alike come out, donning their most festive shoes, and march in unanimity for this fantastic cause.

It is never easier to support a great cause than by going out to eat with friends, family or colleagues at one of Asheville's amazing culinary destinations.  You can do just that in a few weeks. Mark your calendars and call your friends!

Western North Carolina Aids Project (WNCAP) will be hosting the 14th annual Dining Out For Life® benefit  on Thursday, April 28th.  Over 115 of the finest restaurants in WNC have generously agreed to donate 20% of their gross sales on this day to help meet their expanding needs.  

Last year, Asheville supporters helped to raise over $176,000 to support the mission of WNCAP with less than 7% of that money going toward covering expenses.  This fundraiser allows them to add additional caseworkers and services in rural communities.You can do your part by simply dining out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  Check out participating restaurants or sign up to come volunteer!

1st Quarter of 2016 Continues with a Strong Seller's Market in Asheville


2016 started off strong in the Asheville Buncombe housing market.  According to the analysis of the 1st Quarter of 2016 by Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty, home sales were strong through the end of the first quarter.


Median Home Sale Prices


Median home sale prices climbed to a new quarterly record of $250,000 in Asheville.  This indicates an 11.1% increase over the previous median price of $225,000 a year ago.  In Buncombe County, the median home price this past quarter was $227,500, 10.4% higher than the same time a year ago.

Inventory, or the number of homes on the market, is a factor that is considered in determining the health of the housing market.  


As of April 2016, inventory in Asheville was under 6 months in the price ranges below $600,000. For the $600,000 and $700,000 price range, inventory was at 6 months. This represents lower inventory levels in Asheville in the middle/upper price ranges compared to previous years.


Inventory in Buncombe County was under 6 months for price ranges under $450,000 and was lower in almost every price range in the 1st quarter of 2016 compared to the same time period in 2015.

Average Days on the Market




The average Days on Market (DOM) in Asheville decreased to 69 days in the 1st quarter of 2016, the lowest since 2004. The average Days on Market in Buncombe County decreased to 95 Days on Market, the lowest since 2007.  The peak in Days on Market in the years 2009 to 2015 was artificially inflated by an estimated 30 days because during those years, the MLS software counted days when a property was under contract but had not closed. The software no longer counts days for DOM calculations when a property is under contract.

Median Price Per Square Foot


Median price per square foot increased in Asheville in the price ranges of $250,000 to $700,000 and slightly decreased in lower and higher home value brackets.  In Buncombe County, the reverse is generally true, with mid-level priced homes seeing a decrease in price per square foot and lower and higher end homes seeing an increase.

Green Homes


Inventory of green homes both within Asheville and Buncombe county is below six months, indicating a healthy seller’s market for this subgroup.  The median price per square foot for Asheville’s green homes is $217 versus Buncombe County’s $183 per square foot.

HGTV Urban Oasis 2015 Home for Sale

Moving in Asheville: 10 Tips for Green Spring Cleaning and Moving

Thinking of selling or buying a home in Asheville?  Put quite simply, homes that are de-cluttered and clean sell more quickly.  The problem is, we tend to accumulate a lot of stuff through the years, making moving a messy and potentially wasteful process.


Mosaic Realty is a  supporter of the urban environmental conservation organization, Asheville Greenworks.  We have collaborated with them to bring you a resource guide for cleaning your home ahead of this spring moving season while keeping the environment in mind.  




Here are 10 items that can be hard to dispose of when you are moving and a solution for what you can do with them in  Asheville.


Getting ready to move.... Declutter!


1. Bedding


Clean out those linen closets!  Brother Wolf, a local animal rescue organization,  gladly accepts donations of used bedding to create a comfortable environment for the pets up for adoption.


      2.  Cooking Oils


Cooking oils can easily clog up your home's plumbing and the city sewage system.  Asheville Greenworks and Blue Ridge BioFuels have partnered to provide locally-made recycling bins for used cooking oil.  They are placed throughout Buncombe County and can be found here.


     3.  Electronics, Scrap Metal and Batteries


Biltmore Iron and Metal Company, in Biltmore Village, uses environmentally safe procedures and will recycle many metals.  Check their website for details.  They also accept white goods and appliances, including stoves.


      4.  Gently Used Books


Consider paring down your book collection and making a donation to our local book mobile, Snake, Rabbit and Snail or get store credit at Mr. K's Books in East Asheville.  


      5.  Working Appliances, Furniture, and Building Materials


Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity gladly accepts these items for use in their Re-Store.  Call to schedule a pick up at (828) 254-6706.  


      6.    Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)


These energy efficient light bulbs can be recycled after use at the Buncombe County Landfill or Lowes and Home Depot stores.  If you have some that you are no longer using but still have life in them, consider donating them to a favorite charity for use in their organization's space.


      7.  Motor Oil, Used Oil Filters, and Empty Propane Tanks


Cleaning out the garage?  Inevitably, you will find containers of oil.  Advanced Auto and Autozone provide free recycling for these potentially environmentally harmful products.  Biltmore Iron and Metal will take your empty propane tanks.


     8.  Plastic Flower and Planting Pots


If you are unable to reuse these yourself, Home Depot and Lowes will both accept used flower and planting pots.

 9.  Moving boxes


After moving, we are often left with mountains of cardboard boxes.  Although moving boxes can be recycled with curbside waste management in Asheville, you can repurpose them by breaking them down then layering them in your yard under a bed of mulch to keep weeds down.


  10.  Styrofoam Peanuts and Bubble Wrap


Open Box Moving  Solutions provides a service to help recycle these pesky styrofoam peanuts.  For drop off details, check out Asheville Greenwork's  Hard 2 Recycle Collection.  UPS and Fex-Ex stores will also accept bubble wrap and packing peanuts.
