Montford's established restaurants such as Nine Mile, Tod's Tasties, and Chiesa are soothing to the palate.  With it's quaint bed & breakfasts and historical elegance, Montford has become a prominent neighborhood in Asheville. End of the Year Financial Check List

financial checklistDecember has many of us thinking we can't believe it is almost the end of the year. Where did 2015 go? As the year comes to a close, it's a good time to do a little financial housekeeping.

Consider the following as your close at your year and start 2016.

Give... reduce your tax liability by doing good:

Now is the time to get credit for your 2015 tax return. December is a time where we are reminded of the many people in need in and around our communities. This is a good time to give goods, clothing, or cash to inspire good.

Some ideas on local Asheville charity needs-

Donate cash to a local Holiday Toy Drive - Eblen Charities St. Nicklaus Project

Donate cash to help finish a women's shelter - Western Carolina Rescue Mission Woman's Shelter on Patton Avenue

Re-assess your Retirement

Contribute to your 401(k) or IRA

Defer income if 2015 was a high-income year.

Take a Look at Your Mortgage

Mortgage rates have been low. It may be time to take the plunge and refinance while interest rates are still lower than years past.

Rents are on the Rise... Is it Time For You to Buy a Home?

Rents are projected to rise in 2016, and in Asheville rentals go off the market as fast as they go on. This may be the perfect time to start thinking about buying a home. With the holidays and winter, it may help with negotiations, price, and not competing with a crowd of buyers looking at the same homes.

Asheville ChristmasToday, is December 1st, and the beginning of the season of holiday lights, family traditions, celebrations, yummy food, and many toasts in honor of friends, family, and loved ones. Asheville has much to offer during this merrymaking month. Take a peek at our top 8 holiday things to do.

1- Christmas at Biltmore - The nostalgic decor and Christmas tree are a special sight, and will inspire fond memories of when you felt that special feeling of Christmas.

2- Polar Express Train - Sip hot cocoa and watch the kids’ faces light up with the magic of the North Pole and Santa Claus. It’s a short drive to get to the Smoky Mountains Railroad, yet worth the memory in the making.

3- Beech Mountain Ski Resort - 15 slopes and 95 acres of skiable terrain make this a perfect day or weekend getaway to enjoy snow covered ground and racing family and friends down the mountain – the perfect December experience.

4- Visit Biltmore Village - The lighted Christmas tree and shops are filled with the spirit of Christmas. It’s quaint and charming. Visit the Christmas store, taste a cookie from Well-Bred, or enjoy some traditional Mexican food at The Cantina.

5- The Omni Grove Park Inn - Pure magic. The live fire in the extra-large fireplace, photos next to Santa’s sleigh on the porch overlooking the endless mountain peaks, and holiday drinks to delight. Consider viewing the annual Gingerbread house competition entries, or visit to relax and enjoy the holiday decor.

6- Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum - Take a stroll through the NC Arboretum to view lights which complement the plants and trees.

7- Rappelling Santa at Chimney Rock - Each Saturday in December, Santa can be seen practicing for his Christmas Eve rappel down this 535-million-year-old rock! We hear he does this to make up for all the milk and cookies he eats on Christmas Day!

8- ZipLine - Take the family out for a zipline adventure at the Crowne Plaza® Resort Asheville. The kid-friendly zip-line is perfect for kids and adults, and is located a mile from downtown Asheville. We dare you to wear a Santa hat or reindeer antlers and take a selfie!
