Stacey Enos, Mosaic Realty broker, former US Women’s National Soccer Team member (‘85-’86), and soccer advocate took the lead on reuniting the first ever US Women’s National Soccer Team (The 85ers) right here in her hometown of Asheville in early July.
First USWNT Reunites in Asheville
With 11 of the 17 original teammates descending on Asheville for the reunion, Stacey took the opportunity to show them some of her favorite spots in her beloved city. Friday night’s festivities included dinner at Highland Brewing Company and a LaZoom tour with a stop at Olde London Road Pub. The excitement around this first-ever reunion was palpable as members of the media followed the pioneering star athletes around town.
Ahead of the last game of the Asheville City Soccer Club season, Stacey spear-headed an opportunity for the soccer youth of the Asheville community to meet the team, among them World Cup stars and the FIFA female player of the century, Michelle Akers (USWNT member ‘85-’00). The 85ers signed autographs for fans during the pregame of Asheville City hosting Wake FC, sporting replica jerseys to honor their 1985 team.
The weekend was filled with lots of interviews and film crews from US Soccer, USL, NBC/Universal and a podcast group called, Flamebearers. The team's hotel, Westin Element, was gracious and allowed them to take over the lobby, rooftop and pool in order to capture this special occasion.
"The US women’s national team is the most successful international team, winning four World Cup titles (‘91, ‘99, 2015, and 2019, four Olympic golds (‘96. 2004, 2008, 2012) and nine CONCACAF gold medals. It all started with a dream and some courageous dreamers (my teammates) in Italy 38 years ago. We have so much to be proud of and that's part of what this weekend is all about, I want to celebrate my teammates. I want them to get the exposure they deserve." - Stacey Enos
Stacey has truly touched the lives of thousands of soccer players, initially through her inspirational soccer skills and love of the game, and now through her ongoing advocacy of soccer for all. She is currently a co-owner of Asheville City Soccer Club, helping to host a space for the present and future of soccer. She also played a pivotal role in the creation of Just Play WNC, an organization that aims to break down systemic barriers to soccer and create a more inclusive environment for youth and their families.
