Diana Wortham Theatre's Mainstage Series Entertains With Eclectic Lineup

Asheville boasts a range of theater venues producing world-class shows to entertain everyone. From Broadway musicals to children’s productions to intimate stage theater, you’ll find an array of performing-arts options for that next special date night, or a fun family afternoon outing.

A big performing-arts draw year after year is the Mainstage Series at the Diana Wortham Theatre. An intimate 500-seat venue, the Diana Wortham Theatre is centrally located in downtown Asheville in the heart of Pack Square. Its Mainstage Series features a full season of live performances of music, theater and dance by nationally renowned touring artists. Co-sponsored by Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty and JAG Construction, the series showcases the value of the arts in forging community connections, something close to the heart of Mosaic’s philosophy.

Theater Asheville PianoWith the 2018-19 recently announced, the lineup features everything from exotic acrobatic performances to classic Shakespeare to contemporary dance. Following, a few highlights from the coming season:

Mélange (Sept. 15, 2018) – Asking the crowd to select from a musical menu of more than 30 works in 15 different styles — from classical to jazz to baroque — the members of Mélange are completely in control of the audience, with captivating results.

Blindside (Nov. 2) – Entertaining for all ages, Blindside is one-eyed storyteller Stéphanie Morin-Robert’s account of her life as a feisty 7-year-old cancer survivor, wielding her glass eye as a superpower and using spoken word, contemporary dance and live projected video to leave a dramatic, humorous, meaningful impression.

The New Chinese Acrobats (Nov. 7) – With vibrant costumes of smooth silk, sparkling lace and brightly colored spandex, the New Chinese Acrobats awe with unbelievable physical feats.

We Shall Overcome: A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. featuring Damien Sneed (Jan. 22, 2019) – Pianist, singer, composer and bandleader Damien Sneed and his curated group of performers celebrate generations of civil rights activists.

Diana Wortham Theatre AshevilleAquila Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Feb. 2) – One of  Shakespeare’s most beloved and witty comedies is brought to life in this innovative new production. Beautiful movements, unique staging and bold physical style come together in a feast for the senses.

Piano Battle (March 28) – Piano Battle pits two musicians – Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis – against one another in a unique and interactive performance, where the audience gets to decide who emerges the winner.

Ballet Hispánico (April 9 and 10) – Fusing bold and eclectic contemporary dance with traditional Latino influences, Ballet Hispánico showcases heritage-inspired movements in a stunning display.
