Bakersville, N.C., Sprinkles Small-Town Charm Amid Expansive Mountain Beauty

Bakersville NC

Known as the “Gateway to the Roan,” Bakersville, N.C., serves up stunning Blue Ridge scenery wrapped in small-town charm. In the 1800s, its rich deposits of mica put Bakersville on the map; today, it’s a thriving art scene, outdoor adventure, and a relaxed lifestyle that draw people to the area.

Situated an hour northeast of Asheville, Bakersville (with a population of around 460) is the county seat of Mitchell County. Boone and Johnson City, Tenn., are also within an hour’s drive away. Properties in Bakersville offer something for everyone – whether you’re in the market for a compact cabin, a sprawling estate, or an expansive lot to create your own dream home.

Bakersville: an art lovers’ haven

Art is at the heart of Bakersville, with many artists calling the mountain town home. There are several world-class galleries to visit, including the cooperative Mica gallery as well as In Tandem Gallery, featuring a wide selection of ceramics and jewelry. The famed Penland School of Crafts is only a short drive away.

One of the best parts of living in Bakersville is its amazing proximity to the majestic Roan Mountain, a popular destination for its stunning 360-degree views and miles of exhilarating trails along the Appalachian Trail. Roan Mountain is famed for being home to the largest naturally growing gardens of Catawba rhododendrons in the world; it also boasts breathtaking spruce-fir forests and grassy balds.

Other outdoor adventures in and around Bakersville include hiking trails off the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway; tubing and kayaking on the Toe River; and fishing (Bakersville is a Mountain Heritage Trout City).

Day trips from Bakersville

Quick visits to neighboring small towns offer the opportunity for eclectic exploration. Spruce Pine, Burnsville and Little Switzerland are all less than a half hour away. Take in the annual Fire on the Mountain, a popular celebration of the art of the blacksmith held in downtown Spruce Pine (11 miles away) on the last Saturday in April. Or visit the Emerald Village & Mining Museum in Little Switzerland (18 miles away) to learn about the local gem and mining history, do a little panning, and even take a Black Light Mine Tour to view an underground mine lit up with special ultraviolet lamps.
