Leicester’s ideal location puts it mere minutes from West Asheville, Downtown Asheville, Weaverville and Woodfin.

Leicester’s Beginnings

Leicester NC FarmIn 1829, a post office opened in the area, originally called Turkey Creek. Frontiersman Leicester Chapman purchased a tract of land in the area from the city of Asheville, becoming the postmaster in 1852. Seven years later, Chapman renamed the area Leicester for the Earl of Leicester, also his namesake.

New Leicester Highway serves as a main commercial corridor for the community, featuring a range of restaurants, grocery chains, and retail stores. If you’re looking to get away and immerse completely in the outdoors, the Great Smoky Mountains are a little over an hour’s drive. A favorite destination from Leicester is Max Patch in Pisgah National Forest, an Appalachian “bald” and one of the Appalachian Trail’s most popular hikes.
