When Hurricane Florence tore into North Carolina in mid-September, it left a wide swath of destruction in its wake. The storm’s stalled forward motion meant continually heavy rains along the coast. This, coupled with a large storm surge, caused widespread flooding along a long stretch of the N.C. coast, from New Bern to Wilmington, as well as inland. Major rivers spilled over their banks, and major roads and highways experienced such immense flooding that large portions remained impassable for days.
Food for Flooded Areas
In Florence’s aftermath, businesses and communities are coming together to help those tragically affected by the powerful storm. Asheville’s Dr. Dave’s Automotive and Triple D Creations are spearheading one such effort, to bring free hot meals to those ravaged areas via a pop-up kitchen trailer.
The mobile kitchen, donated for the disaster relief by Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, is capable of serving up to 2,000 hot meals a day. As many residents remain without power, and emergency relief workers are still struggling to reach towns cut off by flooding, the mobile kitchen is working to help those affected and provide as many free meals as possible, thanks to donations and volunteers.
A Collective Helping Communities
The effort, of which Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty is a financial supporter, is part of the Grassroots Aid Partnership (GAP), which brings together socially responsible companies and volunteer aid groups with experience in disaster relief.
GAP’s vision is to find underserved areas affected by disaster and serve healthy hot meals, sourcing organic options when possible and providing a safe space where affected residents can heal through community. In addition to Hurricane Florence recovery efforts, GAP has helped with California wildfire relief, Hurricane Irma recovery in Florida, and Hurricane Harvey recovery.

Other area organizations accepting donations and volunteers to aid Florence-ravaged regions include Foundation for the Carolinas, All Hands and Hearts Smart Response and Americares.
