Ever wonder what makes a perfume scent stand out? Or how a flower goes from open field to fragrant spritz? All of this and more is revealed in the exhibit “Making Scents: The Art of Passion of Fragrance” at The North Carolina Arboretum. The interactive experience, open to visitors now through Sept. 10 at the Arboretum’s Baker Exhibit Center and interspersed throughout the gardens, blends flora, fashion and science to bring to life some of nature’s most fragrant botanicals. Mosaic Realty is a proud community partner of “Making Scents.”
Delve into scent science
The product of almost two years of research, “Making Scents” returns after a five-year hiatus, bringing with it a fascinating exploration into the art, history and science of perfume and fragrances. Visitors can follow the various paths of fragrance creation, from traditional harvesting and extraction methods to the chemical processes necessary to create synthetic fragrances. The multisensory exhibit immerses visitors not only in the process behind perfume creation, but the background and history of fragrances around the world.
“Making Scents” is fun for the whole family, young and old. There are a dozen different scent-seeking stations holding mystery fragrances, their stories, and container gardens showcasing the plants used to create the mystery scents.
Beauty in bottles
“Making Scents” also showcases fragrance fashion: A “Perfume Palace” featuring 200 different perfume bottles is on display, with vessels from ancient Greece and Rome, 19th Century artisan creations, and designer bottles including Lalique, Tiffany and Steuben. A video slideshow offers insight into the bottles, many of which came from the International Perfume Bottle Association.
Admission to “Making Scents” is free; standard Arboretum parking fees apply. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. For more information, visit www.ncarboretum.org.
