Green Thinking Takes Center Stage in Today's Interior Design

Asheville Green Home Design

Planning your dream home in Asheville? Whether you’re starting fresh in a new space, or seeking to update your current home’s decor, trends in interior design are coming into focus this year, with an emphasis on “green” – in more ways than one.

With environmentally conscious construction gaining ground in Asheville, home interior designs are reflecting the movement, incorporating recycled, reclaimed and found materials into the design. Drawing inspiration from Asheville’s naturally stunning surroundings, interior designers are bringing green, airy elements of the outdoors in. Of course, the kitchen continues to be a design focal point, especially in this food-centric city. Following, a few ways to take advantage of today’s trends and give your home’s interior a fresh face:

Sustainability is an across-the-board trend that doesn’t stop at the front door. Finding furnishings that boast durable or recycled materials means less waste: Think a coffee table crafted from reclaimed wood, or a set of eco-chic chairs made from recycled materials. Peruse one of Asheville’s many flea and antique markets for just the right found-object-turned-focal-point. Bare wood surfaces favoring oak trees are a popular choice, and the area’s plentiful growth makes such wood easy to source locally to create a custom countertop.

Naturally Inclined

Bringing the outdoors in has become one of the best interior design trends for 2019. In Asheville, it’s particularly popular for a home’s interior to reflect the city’s airy, Blue Ridge backdrop. This trend can take the form of natural wood and stone materials incorporated into bathrooms, kitchens, even walls.

Also finding fans in 2019 is the color green, with such elements as cabinetry, furnishings and walls taking on the tint. Go for a hunter shade for a fresh take on kitchen cabinets, or accent a living room wall with emerald. For a less dramatic take on the trend, incorporate moss-hued throw pillows or a pine-colored shag rug to make your living space pop.

A nod to nature can be as simple as adding a little living greenery – in the form of easy-care succulents, fast-growing vines and statement potted trees that supply earthy texture. Another plant perk: Those leaves help to purify the air, for fresher, healthier breathing.

Home Design Trends in AshevilleThe Communal Kitchen

The kitchen continues to be the epicenter of the home, fueled not only by Asheville’s food-centric mentality, but by the supply of and ease with which fresh, locally grown produce and meat can be obtained. However, kitchens go beyond cooking: Trends toward making the kitchen a multipurpose yet open area mean communal elements are a must. Consider a kitchen island, or a peninsula, lined with low-profile stools and enough openness to allow family and guests the option to perch or to circulate. Another trend in line with the more relaxed, communal kitchen space: built-in benches, banquettes and booths. Such arrangements allow for better use of space, and more comfortable seating for lounging.

After a day of enjoying the beautiful, invigorating environs of Asheville, it’s nice to come home to a space that continues the theme. Incorporating these natural, airy design trends will make the transition from the great outdoors to the great indoors a seamless and inviting one.
