With the holiday season upon us, we at Mosaic Realty find ourselves reflecting on the many things for which we are thankful. A big part of that gratefulness centers on life in Asheville, N.C. Here are just a few of the many reasons living in Asheville fills us with gratitude.
Want to get a kick out of helping the Asheville community? Then join Mosaic Realty broker Kathleen Cook on Dec. 7 from 5-8pm as she teams up with Devil’s Foot Beverage Company for a fun-filled evening in support of Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association and the soccer outreach programs the organization brings to the region.
Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty has long advocated for the outstanding community organizations that work tirelessly to support the residents of Asheville and surrounding areas. As Giving Tuesday 2023 approaches, Mosaic will grow its community support by offering a matching donation to benefit Asheville City Schools Foundation’s DREAM program. From now until November 28, Mosaic will match donations dollar for dollar, up to $5,000, to help fund DREAM – Dedicated, Responsible, Enthusiastic, After-School Mentors – a program that brings a sense of home and belonging for students, just as Mosaic brings a sense of home in the Asheville area. Make your donation at https://www.acsf.org/giving-tuesday.
Students growing together
DREAM, a youth-centered, paid internship program for high school students to support the mission and programming of Asheville City Schools Foundation, comprises 18 diverse high schoolers who provide mentorship to middle schoolers in the “In Real Life” after-school program at Asheville Middle School. DREAM offers an outlet for tenth- through 12th-graders to work and grow together. The program provides high schoolers with a non-traditional work environment that includes competitive wages, structured professional development, varied skills and work experiences, support in pursuing higher education, and opportunities to participate in extracurricular trips and events. DREAM is the ideal avenue for social-emotional learning, offering the professional life skills that will prove advantageous in the workforce.
Students in 10th through 12th grade at Asheville High School and the School for Inquiry and Life Sciences at Asheville are eligible to apply every fall. Each student commits to one to three days per week and is compensated $15-$20 an hour.
Learning leadership skills
Being part of this inclusive program allows participants to explore different career paths while developing leadership skills. Leadership development for DREAM participants includes classroom and behavior management, cultural responsiveness, conflict resolution, and effective written/oral communication. DREAM interns take part in creating appropriate lesson plans for IRL students, and have the opportunity to incorporate the skills they learn from leadership development sessions.
Structured, peer-mentoring programs such as DREAM have been proven to increase students’ social, emotional and academic growth. DREAM students reflect a considerable boost to leadership skills as a result of participation, and enjoy increased sense of agency, self-advocacy, team-building, collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

An early leader in the Asheville real estate market’s green movement, Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty is proud to be a part of local initiatives toward a healthier planet. To that end, Mosaic is joining forces with Appalachian Offsets for a fourth year in a row. Appalachian Offsets offers carbon offsets to fund projects that address the damage of climate change by cutting carbon-dioxide pollution in our community.
Helping to ease effects of climate change
The production of harmful greenhouse gases by humans is directly linked to climate change. From purchasing foods and products made thousands of miles away to driving gas-guzzling vehicles to heating and cooling our homes and using electricity, our actions have had an impact on the climate, with devastating results: erratic and destructive weather, severe famine, rising sea levels and crop failures. It’s up to us to find ways to stop and reverse the damage. That’s where carbon offsets come in.
Carbon offsets are pollution equivalents that can be purchased to help pay for a renewable energy project, an energy-efficiency upgrade, or the like. For example, the money from the purchase of three tons of carbon offsets would go to fund a project that either reduces carbon-dioxide production by three tons, or removes three tons of carbon dioxide from the air. Carbon offsetting is a long-lasting tool that aids the environment as well as the community.
How carbon offset initiative works
An initiative from the Green Built Alliance, Appalachian Offsets allows Asheville residents and businesses to offset their carbon footprint while at the same time helping local schools, non-profits, and other area organizations. A few simple steps will get you there: First, calculate your carbon footprint, then make a (tax-deductible) donation to Appalachian Offsets to offset your footprint, at a rate of $20 per ton. The offset donation is then matched with a local school, non-profit, or other community organization to help pay for an energy-efficiency project. Contributions from Mosaic have gone to support a variety of Appalachian Offsets projects, such as water-conservation upgrades, energy-efficiency lighting retrofits, and solar-energy installations.
